What is Happening

First and foremost, Mills Branch industrial wind generation project is very much alive and well. The corporation behind the 500′ turbines has not left Kent County. Some of the leases signed with local farms extend to May, 2019, and until and unless they terminate those leases they can exercise their option to build on those properties and or sell those leases to other companies. (Note – leases can be terminated at anytime by Apex for any reason, but once signed they cannot be terminated by the farmer/leaseholder for any reason).

We know that Apex’s salesmen are still circulating among landowners who have refused contracts to date, trying to convince them what a great idea it would be to sign away their rights for 30 years. The company has also applied for and received approval for 2 more MET tower permits from the county. The public statement from Dahvi Wilson, the Apex spokesperson, that “we have decided to slow that process down so that we can have more time to hear from the community” means they have not been listening too closely and need to be told again they need to find a more suitable spot to park their turbines. Kent County and Keep Kent Scenic, while supporting appropriate pathways to reduce CO2 emissions, do not think that placement of these turbines are fitting for the landscape, culture or environment of the county. No means no. Can we make it any clearer? Keep Kent Scenic continues to organize, increase stakeholders, educate and act as a resource in this ongoing fight. The talk of capitulation by Apex is premature and incorrect; strength in community opposition is the best weapon we have to convince them to move on to a more suitable venue.

We will let you know when we hear the door shut behind Apex as it leaves the County.

Volunteers are always needed and welcome.  Join our team to talk to the community at Farmer’s Markets and Festivals.
